Information on telematics-based cover in a nutshell

The absolute shortest explanation of how this type of car insurance for women works is that it lets safe, low mileage motorists receive low-cost quotes which reflect their positive driving habits and skills.

Now, let’s broaden the explanation. At the outset of a telematics policy, a motorist can usually choose to purchase a certain number of miles of cover. For example, some providers offer a 6,000 or 8,000 mile annual allowance – letting drivers top up their miles if they run out before renewal.

The number of miles travelled will be measured by the insurer via GPS – which we’re about to go into further detail about – and the motorist will be able to check up on how many miles they’ve used via a personal portal or dashboard.

Following the purchase of a policy, the policyholder will have a telematics device, also known as a black box or Clear Box, fitted into their vehicle by an expert engineer.

This gadget, which includes GPS technology, records information relating to the policyholder’s driving, such as the time of day they use their car, which roads they drive on, and whether they accelerate aggressively or brake harshly.

This information is sent to the insurer, who then analyses it to come up with an accurate picture of the motorist’s level of risk on the road. This personal driving data is used to help set an appropriate price for the individual’s annual premium.

Information on the Gender Directive in a nutshell

In order to make car insurance prices equal between genders, the EU has announced that from the 21st December 2012 insurers will no longer be able to calculate the level of risk posed by a motorist using their gender.

Whereas women have generally always received cheaper car insurance than men because they are statistically less likely to make an expensive claim after a road traffic accident, since the aforementioned date they have been receiving quotes of a similar price to male road users.

For some female drivers this might mean that their annual premium goes from being affordable to substantially more expensive and financially troubling.

Thankfully, as we have already mentioned, safe, low mileage drivers should be able to avoid suffering this price increase by purchasing a telematics-based policy.
