We've seen it all - from electric bikes and fold-up bikes to mopeds and specialist motor bikes. Numerous manufacturers are producing equipment for city dwellers that will zip them around metropolitan streets with more protection, added comfort and extra power so that they don't get themselves into a lather by the time they get to work.
There are also some great woman car insurance deals that can be snapped up for these types of vehicles, reducing your overheads and saving you money if you are a woman.
The three-wheeled concept car
Now, the latest arrival is a three-wheeled concept car from BMW which looks like a motorbike with a protective shell,
three wheels (two at the back, one at the front) and a bolt-on baggage box.
One of the main selling points of this vehicle is that it is eco-friendly, cheap to run, easy to park (it's just one metre wide) and free to park in some urban areas. It will be impossible to break the national speed limit too as the car - called Clever - doesn't go any faster than 50 mph. It also falls into a lower congestion charge bracket and may even save you a fortune on your motor insurance.
This type of vehicle may be just the ticket for the city woman driver who wants a quick get-around without the hassle of finding somewhere to park or high overheads. But, it's definitely solo territory as you can't carry any passengers (although this also means that you're not responsible for them) and some woman drivers may not like the fact that the car tilts like a motorbike to go around corners. The safety consequences of this titling action have yet to be revealed!
The UK small car market
There are other small cars, like the Smart Car, which reduce traffic and squeeze into the tiniest parking spaces that are
already on the market. Many also qualify for lower woman car insurance premiums. With a combination of cheap car
insurance, lower congestion charges, and lower running costs, they're the perfect choice for the cost-conscious woman
driver.
Small cars - the ethical choice
Small cars are also the ethical choice. You reduce the environmental impact of your car by using lead-free petrol and
creating fewer emissions. There's also the small indirect contribution to the effect on the environment in that fewer car
parks will need to be constructed if more women drive small cars.
Critics have pointed out that the boot of the new micro cars could be easy to pick open and is not as secure as those of larger cars. There may also be safety risks posed by their relatively smaller physical frame. Micro cars obviously carry less so if you need your car to get your watersports gear to the nearest lake to windsurf, this won't be for you.
But for those of you who like everything in their life to be neat and compact, who don't want to struggle to find a parking space on their way to a meeting and who want to contribute to making the world around us a safer, greener place then these cars are an excellent option.
With a new government proposal on "environmentally-damaging lifestyles" meaning new income tax changes and dramatic rises in road tax for cars creating a lot of pollution, these lean green machines can no longer be ignored.
