Maintaining your car

It really pays to look after your car, because a little tender loving care means that it will look after you. Alongside your cars’ regular service you should carry out a few weekly and monthly measures that will help you to avoid more costly visits to your mechanic later and may reduce your chances of having an accident.

Here’s a list of basic maintenance that anyone can do for any car:

  • Check your engine oil. This is vital as without oil the engine will seize up and blow a gasket. You should first park the car on a flat surface so that you can get an accurate reading. Your handbook will tell you where the dipstick is. Pull it out and wipe it on a clean cloth, then dip it back in, pull it back out and check the oil level. This should be between the two marks.
  • Check the tyre pressure every week and adjust them to the level stated in the handbook if you need to.
  • Check and top up the windscreen washer. Add a cleaning solution designed to cut through grease, to get rid of insects in the summer and ice in the winter
  • Make sure there is sufficient solution in the coolant system. Modern cars have a plastic reservoir so that you can see the level of the coolant. Include antifreeze in the mixture in winter and summer as it can prevent overheating as well as frost damage
  • Get the brake fluid checked regularly as leaking fluid in the brake system could potentially cause a fatal accident. If the reservoir level seems to be going up and down then you should seek help. If there is no fluid at all do not drive the car. You should also avoid getting any dust or dirt into the reservoir as it will get into the system. If you don’t feel happy checking this, ask your mechanic to do it for you.

*A replacement car can normally be arranged under one of the following conditions: (1) Comprehensive policyholders – a replacement car may be available under the terms of your insurance policy. Please check your policy details for more information. (2) Non fault accident – where we have the name, car registration number and insurance details of the person who caused the accident, we can supply a replacement car. This is done on a credit hire basis which means the costs for this service will be passed onto the insurance company of the person who caused the accident. We may not be able to arrange a replacement car where we are unable to get an admission of liability from their insurance company, or where the driver is untraceable or uninsured. (3) Repair garage – if your car is booked in for repairs following an accident, the repair garage may be able to provide a replacement car (subject to availability).
