Read on to find out about safely towing a vehicle.

Towing a trailer, car or caravan
If you are towing another vehicle for the first time you may be a bit apprehensive. It can take time to get used to the extra weight and the length of your entourage! Once you have covered a few basic safety essentials then you will be able to happily tow anything from a broken down car to a family caravan.

  • Check that your car is able to withstand the extra load. Your brakes, suspension, engine and tyres need to be in excellent condition and your tyres should also be inflated to full load. You can find out about this in your manufacturers handbook
  • Make sure your tow bar is in good condition and is designed to endure the extra weight of your caravan/trailer. It should be fitted professionally and should meet safety standards
  • You can only tow vehicles up to a certain weight according to your driving licence. Check you are not towing too heavy a load
  • If you are towing a wide load such as a caravan, you will need wing mirrors that extend further than the standard ones on your car. You need to be able to see past whatever you are towing
  • Remember that you need extra space when overtaking because you have extra length
  • Because of the extra weight you will need to change the way you brake and accelerate. You must make sure that you brake smoothly and slowly at first and then firmly to prevent your wheels from locking
  • Balance the weight of your car with the weight that is being towed. Uneven weight will make your car unsteady. Load the heaviest weight over the trailer or car axle. The manufacturers handbook will advise you how to best load the trailer or caravan
