Self help for a broken down car
If you drive then there is a strong likelihood that at some point you will break down. This can be frustrating, an inconvenience and even quite frightening if you are stranded by the roadside. Although you may have everything covered from car insurance for women to comprehensive breakdown cover, you may find that it is possible to start your car yourself without having to call out the breakdown service. Here are some common faults that cause a breakdown and some possible remedies.
- Flat battery - If the car won't start then it is possible that your battery is faulty or has completely died. If the engine turns over but won't start then all may not be lost. If you have left something on, such as interior lights, exterior lights, indicator lights or your stereo then turn them off as they could have drained the battery. Then leave the engine off for twenty minutes as it could recharge sufficiently
- Air conditioning leak - If you see water under your car don't panic. It doesn't automatically mean that you have a coolant leak or a radiator leak. If you have air conditioning fitted in the vehicle it is likely that the water under the car is normal condensation and nothing to worry about
- Automatic transmissions - If you drive an automatic and the engine is failing to turn over when you turn the ignition key then it might be a fault with the inhibitor switch. This is fitted to prevent you starting the car if the gear stick is any position other than neutral. Try to rectify this by putting the gear lever into park and neutral several times
- Brakes - Before you start the car you should always check the brakes for a leak in brake fluid which could cause an accident. Before you start the car, pump the brake until the pressure builds up and the pedal becomes rigid. Hold your foot on the pedal to feel for any loss of pressure. If there is loss of pressure then there is a leak in the system
