Driving safely on country roads

Many drivers suffer from anxiety over different types of roads, either because they have had a bad experience whilst on one of these roads or because they are aware of the inherent dangers. Most roads can be very safe if drivers know how to handle every eventuality and how to drive in a way that will avoid potential accidents.

Some people choose to take a 'Pass Plus' course which is advanced driver training with the purpose of improving driver's confidence and ability in all situations http://www.passplus.org.uk/. There are also other advanced driver courses available for the more experienced driver. You can find out about your local trainer from the Yellow Pages. Taking an advanced driver course or Pass Plus can also lead to cheaper car insurance for women and men regardless of their age.

Many people find driving on country roads the most stressful driving situation. We've highlighted some of the best ways to stay safe on rural roads.

Country roads
Country roads can be more dangerous than built up urban areas. There are potentially more hazards on the narrow country roads, anything from people and animals to tractors and other cars can be obscured by the large hedges which line the UK's country roads and the blind corners which are extremely common. Here are a few important points to remember:

  • You should keep a safe distance from farm vehicles as they are large and potentially dangerous. Allow plenty of room if you plan to overtake
  • Country lanes are very narrow and usually not wide enough for two cars to pass. Country lanes have passing places at regular intervals which allow you to pull over and let another person pass
  • Always keep within the speed limit. The scarcity of other vehicles is not an excuse to push your car to the limits. Because of poor visibility you may have less time to react to someone coming the other way. Stopping times are also far greater on muddy or wet roads
  • If you encounter livestock always stop and switch off the engine until they pass. You wouldn't want to inadvertently frighten a herd of Friesian cows
  • Always assume that there will be something round each corner that could potentially cause an accident. Drive slowly and if the corner is completely blind beep your horn to warn of your approach
