How to change a punctured tyre
- Your first priority if you get a puncture is to ensure that you are parked in a safe spot to carry out the tyre change. Many accidents occur when people are stopped on the hard shoulder, so if you can do so, stop away from the traffic
- Make sure the car is on a flat surface and then put the handbrake on. Put the car into 1 st gear if the car is manual or ‘Park’ if the car is automatic. Turn the engine off
- Locate the spare tyre, the wheel jack and the wrench. These should be in the boot of the car under the carpet
- Most jacks have instructions showing you how to begin changing your tyre. If they are not on the jack they may be somewhere near where the jack is stored. These instructions will tell you where to jack the car up and any special steps to take
- Remove the hub cap or wheel cover. You can use the end of the wheel wrench or a screwdriver to prise off the cover
- Before you lift the car with the jack you need to loosen the wheel nuts. The weight of the car will prevent the wheels from spinning and allow you to loosen the nuts. You have to turn the nuts to the left to loosen them, once they start to move, stop
- Now jack the car up. Most cars have a reinforced lip where you can put the jack. If you can’t find this just find a solid part of the car to put the jack under. Ensure the jack is on solid ground and start jacking until the wheel is off the ground
- Now remove the tyre. Take off the wheel nuts and then remove the tyre with your hands
- Put the new wheel on the car. Put the wheel nuts back on and tighten them slightly. You will completely tighten the nuts once the car is back on solid ground
- Let the car down off the jack and tighten the nuts with the wrench
- If you have put on a spare tyre you must remember that these can only be driven a few miles to the nearest garage and then at only a maximum of 50 mph
