Engine oil
It is very important to make sure your engine has the right amount of oil as it can be seriously damaged without it. You need to carry out a regular check to ensure that your oil level is correct.
- Check the oil level as often as once a fortnight. You should do this when the engine is cool and the car is parked on a level surface
- To check the oil you need to find the dipstick. This usually sticks out of the engine and in more modern cars is coloured orange or red. If you are unsure about the location of your dipstick check your owners manual
- Take out the dipstick and wipe it clean on a rag or piece of tissue. Be careful as this can be messy and oil tends to stain! Put the cleaned dipstick back in fully and then pull it out and make sure that the oil level is between the two markers
- Make sure when topping up the oil you use the correct one for your engine. If you have a diesel car you must use diesel oil. Check the owners manual to find the correct engine oil for your car
- When refilling the oil make sure you check periodically that you are not adding too much. Pour in small amount and then recheck the dipstick. Refill until the oil is between the two markers
- Oil should be replaced at every service inspection of your car which is usually every year. It should always be changed every 10,000 miles
