The first part of the exhaust to need attention is normally the silencer. This is because it is the part that is the furthest away from the engine and is therefore the most likely to be corroded by acidic moisture. This part is kept relatively cold and exhaust gases have a chance to condense forming pools of acid which damage the metal work. The way to establish that there is a problem is that your exhaust will make a roaring sound.
Other noises to listen out for are
- Hissing, which indicates a crack in the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe or a leaking gasket
- Chugging, which can mean that there is a blockage in the system
- Rattling, this means that the exhaust may be misaligned
- Metal on metal, this may mean that something is touching the exhaust
Hangers and brackets hold the exhaust in place, if they become eroded then you may experience exhaust failure.
If you hear any noise coming from your exhaust you should get it checked out as soon as possible. Leaving it can lead to an expensive garage bill in the long term. It is possible to replace individual parts but if one part is corroded it may mean that the whole exhaust system is on the way to the big scrap yard in the sky!
