Women take heart from cheap car insurance and better work/life balance
Six out of 10 working mums would prefer to spend more time with their children and partner, new research has revealed. With our long hours working culture, many women feel that the time they spend in the car stuck in traffic jams could be better spent with the kids. Although motoring is not as expensive for women as it is for men, with women able to get cheap car insurance because they are safer on the roads, many women would prefer to spend less time in the car.
Women make 40 per cent more escort trips than men, this means taking the children to school or taking an elderly relative to the shops. Women also make 20 per cent more grocery shopping trips.
Studies show that if every worker spent one day per week working from home or if companies opted for flexible working hours then there would be a reduction in traffic similar to if the school run was completely removed. This would also mean that many working mums would be able to spend more time at home and get their job done at the same time. If more companies adopted flexible or tele-working then a better work/life balance could be achieved by more people.
The RAC Foundation is championing the introduction of tele-working by calling for:
- The government to fund publicity measures to highlight the advantages of teleworking to employers and employees
- More research into the current extent of tele-working and the future benefits
- Tax incentives and a clarification in legislation to allow easier home working
