Buying a personalised plate - part 1
- The first thing you will need to do is get a registration number for your car. This applies whether your car is brand new or used. You can get these either from the DVLA or from specialist dealers who have a large range of number configurations for you to choose from, you'll pay a fortune for plates such as A1 or B1G, but less popular plates, for example those that include your initials, are much more affordable.
- The next step you need to take is to get legal ownership of the number. Head for your local DVLA office and pick up a V750 Certificate of Entitlement form. This allows you to transfer the number to your vehicle.
- You can either keep the personalised number on retention for an extra fee or the V750 form lets you keep it for a fixed period of time. At the end of this time you must either use the number or lose it.
