Buying a personalised plate - part 2

• You will need to get in touch with the DVLA to register the personalised number plate. You can do this by post or by visiting the local office. Visit http://www.dvla.gov.uk/ or call 0870 240 0009.

• To attach the new number you have chosen to a new car you will need a registration form and the V750. To attach the number to a used car you will need your insurance certificate, your Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax), an MoT certificate if applicable and the V750 form. You will also need to complete a V317 form to move your selected number plate onto a formerly registered car. In both these circumstances you will be charged an assignment fee by the DVLA.

• It takes around 4 days to register a new personalised number plate. Over this time it is illegal to drive the car as it is not registered.
