Benefit from cheap car insurance for women if you are an older driver

Now that the roads are becoming more congested and driving is more complicated there are greater risks for older drivers who may find their reactions have slowed.

The following shows how older people need to take a few precautions with their driving as their reaction times, eyesight and driving judgement may be slightly impaired as they get older. It is important to realise that changes to our health and our senses may occur gradually and therefore may not be easily recognised. Here are some tips from the Think Road Safety website from the Department of Transport http://www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk/index.htm. These tips adapted from the Highway Code will help you to remain aware of your driving abilities.

  • Driving can be stressful. Allow plenty of time for your journey and plan the route in advance. If possible, ask a passenger to navigate and keep an eye out for direction and exit signs
  • Before setting out , make sure the windscreen and door mirrors are clean and all mirrors are properly adjusted. Before moving into traffic, signal clearly and in good time for other road users to be able to see you and react. Only move off when it is safe to do so
  • Do not exceed the speed limit. Speed is a major cause of accidents: at 35 mph it takes a further 21 feet to stop than at 30 mph
  • Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. In good conditions, leave a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front on roads carrying fast traffic. The gap should be doubled on wet roads and increased still further on icy roads
  • Use the mirror-signal-manoeuvre routine , but remember the backward look to check the blind spot. If you find your neck, shoulder or body movements are becoming restricted, try rotation exercises to improve your mobility
  • Take extra care at junctions and intersections and don't be pressured into moving before you feel it is safe. Give yourself time to take in the whole scene and watch out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists as they are not always easy to see
  • When approaching roundabouts and miniroundabouts take notice and act on all the information available to you, including traffic signs, traffic lights and lane markings which direct you into the correct lane. Be prepared for pedestrians crossing the road, traffic crossing in front of you on the roundabout and other potential hazards, such as cyclists, long vehicles and towed trailers
  • Take extra care when turning right , entering a major road from a minor road, making U-turns and reversing. Research shows that older drivers can have problems when judging and making these manoeuvres
  • Practice good lane discipline. Signal in good time when changing lanes and don't weave from lane to lane, straddle two lanes or try to change lanes at the last minute. On the motorway, keep to the left hand lane unless you are overtaking - and remember that the right hand lane is not 'the fast lane'
  • Above all, expect the unexpected. Be alert and anticipate and react to situations on the road ahead and in your peripheral vision. This is especially important in urban areas or on traffic-clogged roads. It only takes a couple of seconds for a child to dart into the road from behind a parked vehicle, or the vehicle ahead to swerve in front of you as it overtakes without checking the road behind
