In the 1890's Louis Renault, aged 20, made a revolutionary move into the world of motor cars when he converted his tricycle into a small four wheeled vehicle and added another of his inventions, the 'direct drive' gearbox, which was the first ever gear box. In 1898 Renault had his first order for 12 vehicles.

Louis Renault teamed up with his brothers, Marcel and Fernand to create the automobile company known as Société Renault Frères. The brothers knew that they could get valuable publicity for their cars if they participated in motor racing. The company went on to achieve instant acclaim in the first city-to-city races held in France. Sadly Marcel Renault was killed during a race in 1903 and Louis never raced again, however the Renault company continued involvement.

From very early on Renault had a great reputation for innovation. The brothers created the fist Sedan and also patented the first turbocharger. At this time cars were still a luxury item and at 3000 French francs they cost more than most people would earn in 10 years. Over the years Renault branched out into buses, taxis, commercial cargo vehicles, ammunition and aircraft. Renault eventually became the worlds foremost manufacturer of aeroplane engines.

Further on in Renault's history it became clear that the company was to continue producing revolutionary designs. In the 70s and 80s Renault built the Renault Espace, the first of the minivans, which was to remain the most popular minivan for the next two decdes. Other cars built in the 1980s were the Renault 9, the luxurious 25 and the Renault 5.

Today the most popular Renault cars are the Megane, the Laguna, the Scenic and the Clio.
