A blind woman demonstrated yesterday why women driver insurance is always so affordable when she drove eight miles along the Great Barford bypass in a bid to raise money for charity.
Martine Brookes, 56, took the Mayor of Deford, Frank Branston, for a quick spin on the roads when she chauffeured him along the new A421 two days before it officially opened.
Female drivers will usually have cheap car insurance because they are safer drivers compared to men. Yesterday, Martine managed to prove just why for women, car insurance is cheaper.
French-born Martine was just three years old when her sight began to suffer from glaucoma and she lost her vision completely at the age of 30.
She is hoping to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (GDBA) and had been practising her driving techniques on a disused airfield runway in Cambridgeshire since last year.
Martine said, "It's been a fantastic experience and I've been up to 65 miles per hour. On the day I just wanted to be able to drive properly at a speed of around 40 to 50 mph and enjoy it."
The fundraising event marked the 75th anniversary of the GDBA and added another notch to Martine's daredevil belt after already taking part in a fundraising parachute jump.
Martine's ability to drive without any sight just goes to show why women driver insurance is so much more affordable for its customers.
She said, "My son thinks I am mad, but I enjoy the challenge."
