Car insurance firms and police forces throughout the UK are bracing themselves for a massive increase in drink-driving arrests as the World Cup draws closer.
With the tournament looming, beer sales are expected to rise by a whopping 40% every time England play. Pub and club bosses are being warned to expect increased violence caused by boozed-up footy fans.
This year's competition sees a significant number of 2pm kick-offs so the authorities are appealing for drivers to be wary of how much they drink if they intend to drive later in the day.
Andy Sutton from the Local Government Association warned, "Have a few drinks for a two o'clock kick-off and you'll probably be over the limit to drive that evening. Drink heavily for an eight o'clock kick-off and you may not be able to drive the next morning."
The number of drunk drivers predicted to be on the roads is likely to cause a considerable number of accidents, and motor insurance premiums are set to rise as a result. With the increasing amount of English women becoming interested in the beautiful game, it's no longer just men that risk their cheap car insurance rates by drinking after one too many.
Lee-Anne Bass from CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, the specialist car insurance for women provider, commented, "By all means enjoy the games and support your team, but keep off the drink if you're planning to drive later on."
