Nearly 25% of British motorists feel such affinity with their cars that they give them names, according to the latest research from motor insurance firm Lloyds TSB.
Questioning drivers all across the country about the relationship their have with their vehicles, the car insurance company discovered that topping the table of the most popular car name was Betsy, closely followed up by Babe.
A spokesman for Lloyds TSB Car Insurance commented on the revelation, saying, "School runs, long weekends, daily commutes - and traffic jams, mean we're all spending more time than ever in our cars. And the more time we spend with them, the more attached we seem to grow.
"Naming something is a real sign of affection and the fact we're choosing a name for our cars indicates that they're an important part of the family."
Intrigued by the survey, and somewhat disappointed that something as dull as Betsy came top of the pile, the women's car insurance team here at CoverGirl Car Insurance Services did their own research. Asking around the office, we found that most of our girls had christened their cars, with Scruffy, Bubbles, Sparky, The Beast, Sky and Nobby all being mentioned.
Lloyds TSB Car Insurance's full top ten is as follows:
1. Betsy
2. Babe
3. Tiggy
4. Charlie
5. Ruby
6. Homer
7. Herbie
8. Fred
9. Winnie
