Last week saw the latest effort to cut congestion and pollution and encourage economical driving with National Lift Share Day. But, research by Halifax Car Insurance estimated that the majority of Britain's motorists would not choose to car share even then.
Although the survey revealed that two thirds of motorists regard car sharing as a good idea, only one in five are currently carrying passengers to work. This means there are as many as 38 million empty car seats during rush-hour.
The high cost of motoring among young drivers explains why 18-24 year olds are the most likely to car share with 30 passengers for every 100 commuters. On the other hand, every 100 commuters aged 55-64 carry just one passenger.
This reluctance to car share which radically decreases with age is likely to be because older drivers do not regard running costs such as motor insurance a problem. But, even though there are plenty of cheap woman car insurance deals out there, it may be down to you girls to set an example.
Lee-Anne Bass from CoverGirl, the car insurance for women specialists, says: 'When it comes to women, car insurance can be great value but car-pooling is a fantastic way to save even more money.'
'All you need to do is share the journey with a colleague or neighbour and you can save a fortune on fuel whilst also doing your bit for the planet.'
