Research by cheap car insurance firm finds road markings flummox motorists

Drivers who misunderstand the meaning of symbols and lines on the road cause a number of car accidents on roads in the UK each year.

A study by Sheilas' Wheels, a company specialising in cheap car insurance for women, revealed some shocking statistics when it looked at the understanding motorists have of these lines and markings.

The findings show that just one percent of drivers in the study were clued-up on their road markings and were able to correctly identify four common ones, while less than a quarter of all motorists tested got two or more right.

Lee-Anne Bass of CoverGirl Car Insurance Services said, "It is shocking that so few people know what the markings mean because they hold really important guidance for drivers.

"I expect if everyone spent a few minutes brushing up on what the lines mean, a lot less people will lose their right to cheap car insurance in avoidable accidents."

The research also looked at whether males or females are more likely to contravene the Highway Code. Unsurprisingly, the survey found that fewer women than men breaking the regulations, which would explain why it is cheaper to get car insurance for ladies.
