In the olden days, when I was a sprightly young thing and long before wrinkles and cellulite decided to pay a most unwelcome visit, getting banned from driving really wasn't something that us girls thought too much about.
If we happened to get pulled over by a copper for speeding, a cheeky smile and an apologetic, "I'm sorry, Officer," would often get us nothing more serious than a stern lecture and orders to be on our way.
But nowadays, with the ungodly introduction of speed cameras, our feminine charms seem to have lost their use. You can't sweet talk a Gatso, and it won't let you off no matter how short your skirt or how much cleavage you flash.
Our driving licences and our cheap car insurance premiums are in danger and there's not much we can do about it. Or is there?
In actual fact, there is something you can do.
Because motor insurance firm Medex Direct have just announced the launch of a radical new policy that will pay travel expenses of up to £16,000 if you happen to get banned from the road for building up too many points. If the courts decide that your speeding is a habit that you just can't kick, the firm will cover the cost of taxis, public transport or even a personal chauffeur.
Road safety groups have slammed the new scheme and the AA's Neil Greig complained, "This actually sends out quite a dangerous message. The main sanction against speeding is loss of licence."
A spokesperson for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, specialist providers of women's car insurance, said, "This is an interesting idea, although a somewhat controversial one.
"If it proves successful it might be something that other motor insurance companies get involved with in the future."
