A single mum who smashed her car into a gate while swigging vodka from a bottle and talking on her mobile has been locked up by magistrates.
Cerys Anwen Edwards claimed to remember nothing of the incident but was told in court that locals pulled her from the wreckage of her vehicle, which had collided with a parked car and had left her trapped. She apparently asked her rescuers to say that her partner was driving and staggered across the road blabbering, "I was on the phone, rowing with my boyfriend. Can you say it was him?"
She then salvaged a half-drunk bottle of vodka from the remnants of her silver Audi and mumbled, "I just want a drink" before knocking back the remaining liquid. Shocked passers-by called the police and the 26-year-old was promptly arrested.
Edwards, of Connah's Quay, North Wales, appeared in front of Flintshire magistrates and admitted drink driving, failing to provide a blood specimen, driving while disqualified and driving without car insurance, and was jailed for five months and banned from the roads for three years.
Craig Handy, spokesman for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, specialists in women's car insurance, said, "I guess this brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'drink driving'.
"Mrs Edwards obviously doesn't have the best driving record, but when she eventually gets back on the road, a women's car insurance provider might just be able to help her save some money."
