It started with banning good old British beef and stopping our kids from buying a quarter of sweets, but now power-crazed Eurocrats are trying to put an end to cheap car insurance for women too.
Under the recently proposed EU Gender Equality Directive, motor insurance firms will no longer be allowed to adjust premium prices based on the gender of the customer, meaning that women will suffer because of the poor driving habits of men.
Worst hit will be young women motorists aged between 17 and 24, who will see their average car insurance premium rise by a whopping £1,293.60 to almost £1,800.
If the controversial law is passed, female drivers everywhere will suffer as women's car insurance companies go out of business, no longer able to offer the fantastic prices that are available at the moment.
According to recent research by Direct Line Car Insurance, the majority of customers were happy with the way insurers calculate their premiums, and as many as 83% agreed that it was appropriate to consider factors such as driving age, experience and gender.
Craig Handy, spokesman for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, a leading car insurance for women provider, warned that the new directive would have serious consequences for the insurance industry.
He said, "Men are charged more for their car insurance because they're more likely to have an accident. It's not sexist or prejudiced- it's a fact.
"Making it illegal to base the price of motor insurance on gender would be massively unfair, and women all over the country would suffer as a result."
