A three month investigation has finally seen six men and one woman arrested in connection with a massive car insurance racket.
More than 80 London police officers raided addresses in the Harrow and Edgware areas of the city, removing evidence linking the gang to a series of around 60 staged car accidents.
It is thought that those involved sought out and bought luxury cars that were already damaged then staged accidents so that they could claim back their full insurance value.
The con artists targeted families they knew to be insured so that they could claim on their insurance and used witnesses who were in on the scam to back them up. They also made fraudulent personal injury claims using false identities.
The claims were made fairly early on in the car insurance policy's life and then cancelled so that the fraudsters effectively paid very little but made a substantial gain.
A Ferrari and two BMW X5s were seized during the raids as they were thought to represent the proceeds of the gang's crimes.
Motor insurance scams cost the industry over £1 billion every year and responsible motorists end up paying through their policies, explaining why our car insurance premiums are ever increasing.
Lee-Anne Bass of CoverGirl, the women's car insurance experts, says: 'Cheap car insurance is becoming less and less accessible thanks to car crime and insurance scams. However, there are still some specialist online car insurance providers out there who will provide cheap car insurance for women.'
