A young jockey has been banned for driving after magistrates finally grew tired of her persistent offending.
Hayley Turner had her licence revoked just two days after her 23rd birthday as a result of being caught for speeding twice and for driving without car insurance. The Newmarket jockey had been followed by police at speeds of over 90mph as she sped up the A1(M) in her Peugeot 206.
Recently hailed by journalists as one of the best young prospects in the country, Miss Turner was fined £140 and ordered to pay £35 costs in addition to receiving her ban. The Bench refused to take pity on the jockey, who explained that disqualification from driving would cause her career to suffer immensely.
Despite previously being caught without car insurance, Hayley drives 50,000 miles a year in order to race at meetings and claimed that an ability to drive would make her unreliable and unattractive to trainers.
Magistrates spurned her appeals, leaving the jockey to face the prospect of begging lifts from fellow competitors in order to continue racing. She will have to retake her test upon completion of the ban and, despite being a woman, car insurance will prove to be an expensive outlay for her in the future.
