A survey carried out by motor insurance provider, swiftcover.com, has revealed drivers' adverse feelings towards speed cameras, despite the fact that they can help keep cheap car insurance available.
Speed cameras are put in place to slow down traffic, especially in known road accident black spots. However, research shows that this method of speed reduction is not valued by British motorists who regard the speed camera as only the tenth most effective way of improving road safety.
It has been revealed that alternative methods such as speed-activated warning signs and driver education schemes are seen as more effective than speed cameras.
Even though speed cameras pull in around £114 million every year, when it comes down to it, many think that speed cameras are simply money down the drain.
32% stated that they would like to see the funds raised from speeding fines spent on improving the emergency services.
Andrew Blowers, Chief Executive of swiftcover.com, commented: 'Britain's drivers are not only frustrated by the ineffective use of cameras - many are hit in the pocket with a fine for speeding, and could face increase insurance premiums, when they believe that they were driving safely for the prevailing conditions at the time.'
A spokesperson for CoverGirl Car Insurance, who specialise in cheap car insurance for women, added: 'Even though speed cameras can seem like a drag they are put in place for a good reason, and by abiding to road safety laws you will not only make the roads a safer place but earn your right to a cheap car insurance rate.'
