A court has heard how a newlywed woman and her husband were forced to live in their car because their parents didn't approve of their marriage.
Mr and Mrs Bashir, both in their early twenties, ran the car's engine to keep themselves warm at night, but were arrested when police discovered they had no car insurance.
Defending at Blackburn Magistrates' Court, the couple's solicitor, Basharat Ditta, explained to the bench why the car was being used to sleep in, saying, "The reason for that is he married against the wishes of his family.
"For whatever reason they did not feel the person he married was suitable. He was told he had made his choice and must leave the family home."
Magistrates sympathised with the couple but fined Mr Bashir £125 and banned him from the road after he pleaded guilty to driving without motor insurance, a licence or a test certificate.
Salim Mulla, secretary of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, said, "It is only in very extreme cases that the family loses contact with the child.
"If the boy and girl are happy then I think the parents should leave the couple to their own lives and not interfere."
A spokesperson from CoverGirl Car Insurance services, the women's car insurance experts, commented, "It does seem a real shame to start married life like this.
"This couple could have avoided a court appearance if they had logged on to the net and found a cheap car insurance firm that could have offered them a fantastic price on their premium."
