An online car insurance firm has carried out research into the way in which parents get their children to school.
swiftcover.com, a web-based firm which specialises in cheap motor insurance, found that over 4 million people in the UK choose to take their children to school by car rather than use public transport.
Some parents gave their reason for this choice as being that cars are safer and more comfortable than alternatives such as trains or buses, whilst other parents felt they had no other option but the car.
Andrew Blowers of swiftcover.com explained further, saying, "Our research shows that people travel an average of four miles to get to school each day and for most parents the only way to make this journey is by car."
The research also showed that, on average, women do the school run more often than men, with mums transporting their children to school three times a week and dads making up the remainder of the journeys.
Lee-Anne Bass, of online car insurance specialists CoverGirl, commented, "Considering there are so many children being taken to and from school every day by car, it is really important for parents to remember to follow the new child car seat rules in order to keep their kids as safe as possible."
