New research has revealed that the majority of Britain’s drivers are likely to ignore a fellow motorist who has broken down and is stranded at the side of the road, highlighting the vital importance of having adequate car insurance.
The survey, conducted by supermarket giant Tesco, shows that nine out of ten drivers would simply continue driving if they were to see a vehicle stranded on the hard shoulder, even if the occupant was a woman on her own.
Although this may seem somewhat devoid of sentiment, 15% gave their reason for driving on by as their lack of mechanical knowledge, explaining that they were only likely to make the problem worse. Another 40% said they might be able to help but would rather leave it up to the professionals.
Despite this seemingly uncaring attitude, Craig Handy, spokesperson for CoverGirl, specialists in car insurance for women, says it is for the best. “It’s better for drivers to call their breakdown service rather than attempting to flag down other motorists. Doing so can be dangerous for themselves and other road users others, and you never know who might stop.”
He also commented on the potential dangers of being stranded at the side of the road and warned that adequate car insurance is vital to protect your vehicle from further damage if it does happen to break down.
*A replacement car can normally be arranged under one of the following conditions: (1) Comprehensive policyholders – a replacement car may be available under the terms of your insurance policy. Please check your policy details for more information. (2) Non fault accident – where we have the name, car registration number and insurance details of the person who caused the accident, we can supply a replacement car. This is done on a credit hire basis which means the costs for this service will be passed onto the insurance company of the person who caused the accident. We may not be able to arrange a replacement car where we are unable to get an admission of liability from their insurance company, or where the driver is untraceable or uninsured. (3) Repair garage – if your car is booked in for repairs following an accident, the repair garage may be able to provide a replacement car (subject to availability).
