CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, the women's car insurance experts, can reveal how motorists are being hit twice in the pocket by speed cameras.
In addition to the obvious ticket fine, motor insurance premiums rise by an average of £60 because of a speeding conviction, resulting in a decreased chance of being able to find a cheap car insurance deal when a policy comes up for renewal.
The latest figures indicate that two million drivers were found guilty of speeding last year, raising a massive £120million in fines for the Government coffers. In addition, car insurance premiums rose by a combined total of £40million in the same time period because of the convictions.
According to a recent survey by Swiftcover, an online car insurance provider, 58% of British drivers confessed to accelerating above the speed limit after passing a camera, and then slamming on the brakes when they pass another one.
Such erratic driving is a recipe for disaster, but with such costly penalties waiting for those who are flashed, it really isn't a surprise that it takes place. Most of those questioned also expressed their belief that speed cameras divert attention away from hazards, thus making the road a more dangerous place.
Swiftcover's chief executive, said, "Widespread condemnation of the speed camera is to be expected when they seem to be springing up on every corner and one in 10 motorists is stung with a conviction every year."
