A Canadian motor insurance company were stunned last week when a customer phoned up to tell them her car had been crushed by a piece of debris that fell thousands of feet out of the sky.
Karen MacLellan, from Toronto, was forced to make the bizarre claim on her car insurance after returning from a shopping trip to find a 1x3-metre piece of metal embedded in the roof of her sports utility vehicle.
Somewhat bewildered as to how the massive piece of debris had ended up on top of her car, she asked other shoppers for help. Most were just as confused as her, but several witnesses revealed they had seen the metal plummet from the sky.
Initially refusing to believe it was part of an aeroplane, the mother-of-three was eventually notified by authorities that it was, in fact, a section of a cargo plane. She told reporters how she was shocked, saying, "I'm like 'Get out of here'."
Local newspapers have revealed the potentially deadly piece of falling debris was the wing flap of a US-based A300 cargo jet. The aircraft is believed to have landed safely not long after, but authorities are investigating how the incident was allowed to happen.
A spokesman from CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, the women's car insurance experts, said, "We deal with a lot of car insurance claims that arise when people leave their cars parked and go shopping, only to return later to find it has been hit by another vehicle. But we've never had anyone make a claim because their car has been struck by an aircraft - or even part of one. It's amazing that nobody was hurt."
