As a woman, car insurance can be great value because we are considered the safer drivers by motor insurance companies.
The fact that we are less likely to have car accidents has always counted in our favour when it comes to cheap car insurance, but a recent survey has revealed that we are less likely than male drivers to break down.
In total, 75% of UK motorists have broken down and only 16% of men have never broken down, compared to 21% of women, according to the survey commissioned by Prudential Car Insurance.
Men are twice as likely as women to break down after running out of fuel but the main cause of breakdown is engine failure (26%).
Also, it seems that once again our luck is in because the breakdown services tend to put the needs of women drivers first, meaning that more men than women are waiting for over 2 hours for the recovery vehicle to arrive.
However, 16% of British motorists don't have any form of breakdown cover, risking the chance of being left stranded in the middle of nowhere. This is especially dangerous for female drivers travelling alone.
Most take a nonchalant attitude towards breakdown cover, believing that they simply won't break down. However, with firms offering low cost basic cover there really is no reason not to jump at the chance.
So, do female drivers take better care of their cars or do women simply get a fairer deal?
Lee-Anne Bass of CoverGirl Car Insurance Services comments: 'We are usually the more responsible drivers so for a woman, car insurance premiums can be gained at bargain prices, as can breakdown cover. It is always worth making sure you're prepared for every eventuality.'
