You might have thought that the fast-paced, oil-soaked world of rally driving wasn't really a place for women, but CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, the woman car insurance experts, can reveal that two British girls are re-writing the rule books and taking the sport by storm.
Both in their early twenties, Amanda Mcczak and co-driver Jemma Bellingham are pushing for glory in this year's prestigious Pirelli International Rally, hoping to show that whatever men can do, women can do better.
Their start to the season didn't go quite to plan, however, and the pair watched in horror as their car caught fire and was destroyed after a crash in an event in Somerset in April.
Describing the moment they saw their high-performance Ford Escort Cosworth burst into flames, 22-year-old Amanda said, "The car under-steered and hit a bank hard which caused the car to roll. It landed back on four wheels and it was then we saw the flames coming from the bonnet.
"The co-drivers side window and the windscreen were smashed and Jemma's door had jammed so she had to escape by climbing over and into my side of the car"
The car was completely gutted in the fire and the ladies were left fearing their season might be over before it really got going. However, a kindhearted motor insurance broker from Lancashire heard about the girls' plight and offered them the use of his car for their forthcoming Pirelli Rally appearance.
Now Amanda and Jemma are raring to go again and, promising to look after the borrowed car, the pair are all set to give it some proper girl-power welly at the next race.
A spokesperson for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, the specialist woman car insurance providers, commented, "It's good that women are getting involved in rallying - it's been a male-dominated sport for far too long.
"We wish them all the luck in the world."
