Recent research into car accidents in Cambridge confirmed what women car insurance companies have always known: female drivers are safer than their male counterparts.
It showed more women have been killed or injured in car accidents as passengers than as drivers - and in the majority of cases these injured passengers were travelling with a man at the wheel.
Cambridgeshire County Council's Road Safety Team is responding to the findings by launching a hard-hitting poster campaign, targeted at young male drivers who need to take better care of the women travelling with them.
Previous studies have shown the safer driving message still isn't getting through to male drivers. Many women surveyed in the past have been worried by a partner's reckless driving, whereas men often confessed they drove dangerously in an effort to impress passengers.
Lee-Anne Bass, spokesperson for CoverGirl and an expert on everything women car insurance related, said: "Reckless driving is a big problem among young male drivers, but you'd think having a girl or girlfriend in the car would make them slow down.
"When you travel with a passenger, you're taking on responsibility for another life, and it seems like some men aren't taking that responsibility seriously.
"If you write a car off in an accident, that means a costly car insurance claim and lots of paperwork. But if you have a car crash and your passenger dies, that can really destroy a person."
