The two second rule
Keeping your distance from other cars is the best way to avoid a car accident. If you are in an open space with no obstacles your speed will not be the cause of an accident. If you are driving in a built up area in traffic then an accident is more likely. The easiest way to control your distance from another vehicle is the distance between your car and the car in front of you. This can be controlled be varying your speed.
The gap between you and the car in front should be large enough for you to stop safely in an emergency. The easiest way to maintain a safe distance on a dry road is the ‘two second rule’. A good way to stick to the two second rule is to pick out a marker, for example a tree or a lamp post ahead and when the car in front reaches this marker say the phrase ‘only a fool breaks the two second rule’. You may feel a bit silly but this phrase takes approximately 2 seconds to say. You should finish saying the phrase as you pass the marker. If you reach the marker early then you are not sticking to the two second rule and should slow down.
In poor weather conditions you should at least double the distance you keep between yourself and the car in front to fours seconds. This is because stopping distances increase in wet weather. If you apply the two second rule you will be applying a one metre gap for each mile per hour of your speed. This will greatly reduce the risk of not being able to stop quickly enough in an emergency.
