BMW can be traced back as far as 1913. Karl Friedrich Rapp, a well known engineer worked in a German aircraft company, Rapp Motoren Werke in Munich. The company produced engines for airplanes but they vibrated too much, were deemed unsafe and could not be used. Nearby another engineer named Gustav Otto opened his own small factory making small aircraft.
Because of various financial problems at Rapp Motoren Werke, Karl Friedrich Rapp resigned and the company was taken over by two Austrians Franz Josef Popp and Max Friz. In 1916 Rapp Motoren Werke merged with Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik to form Bayersiche Flugzeungwerke. The name later changed to Bayersiche Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works), or BMW. The company we know today was formed and many decades of car design and manufacturing began. It wasn’t however until 1928 that the first BMW car was produced in the form of the Dixi 3/15.
After the 2nd World War the outlook for BMW was bleak. All of its factories had been destroyed or dismantled and the Allies had imposed a three year ban on production as a result of the aircraft engines and rockets produced by BMW during the War. To get back on its feet BMW produced the Isetta 250 in 1955. It success was attributed to the fact that it fit in well with the mini cars of the 1950s. It was built under license from the Italian manufacturer Iso and used a motorcycle engine and a single door at the front.
