Mazda began as a little company called Toyo Cork Kogyo, Ltd and was founded in Hiroshima, Japan in 1920. It began with humble roots, founded by a man named Jujiro Matsuda who was born in 1875. By 1929 the company had moved away from cork and now began manufacturing machine tools and then ventured into automobile production. The name Mazda comes from Ahura Mazda, the highest Zoroastrian God of reason who granted wisdom and united man, nature and the other gods.

The fist vehicle produced was the tri-cycle truck of which 30 were made as a test. By 1931 these trucks were being exported to China. It was named the "Mazda-Go-a". These were the first Mazda's the world had seen.

The first rotary engine car that Mazda produced was the Mazda Cosmo Sports 110S, was launched in 1967.

Mazda's vehicles continued to sell well and soon they were introduced to the rest of the world. In 1970 Mazda began exporting to the US and in the same year it produced the RX-2 also known as the Capella. The car also had a rotary engine and was the first available to the US market. Mazda continued to develop the rotary engine and in 1971 it produced the Savanna/RX-3 which was a bigger more powerful car. These vehicles began to compete in races and were popular competition for the V8s of the time.

Mazda continues to innovate today with new developments such as the new RENESIS engine that powers the Mazda RX-8.

Today Mazda cars are still extremely popular. Well-liked models such as the Mazda MX-5, which won the 2005/6 Japan Car of the Year award and also the Best Roadster award 2006 from Test Drive magazine, and the Mazda RX-8, are best sellers for this iconic manufacturer. The 21st century has seen Mazda produce its 35 millionth vehicle.
