Woman! Car insurance and green motoring can go hand-in-hand

As a woman, car insurance has to be exactly right for you; it has to be the best value, no hassle, safe, secure, and eco-friendly. We do it fast and that saves energy, and you save the planet. Simple!

All joking aside, we know that fuel efficiency and pollution are potent motoring issues and so, we have put together a few motoring industry green ideas that may just save the world. Most are in development and we offer an idea of when they will be available.

So, get ready to drive green.

Sat-fuel control
A device that combines sat-nav technology with electronic-engine management systems could easily limit your car to the maximum speed of the road you are driving on, thus saving fuel and keeping you legal at all times (not to mention being a boon for cheap car insurance). On the road? The technology is out there, the will perhaps is not. An enforced scheme would be politically difficult, we guess.

Blowing hot air
As we all know, cars produce an awful lot more than just hot air with their fuel emissions. Manufacturers have started to tell us how green their vehicles are, but increasingly these on-paper emission figures are being discredited. In an unprecedented move, the Norwegian Government has banned carmakers from advertising eco claims, on the premise that cars intrinsically can never be deemed planet-friendly.

On the road?
The European Union is proposing an average maximum for manufacturer's car fleets of 130g C0 per km by 2012. Legislation is then hoped to aim for 50g/km in the near future.

Rechargeable Batteries
A fuel cell motor is akin to a constantly recharging battery; using hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity. The only exhaust is water vapour and so would be invaluable to the fight against pollution. However, back in 2000, several manufacturers promised fuel cell models by 2004, but concerns over cost, weight and driver acceptance (no vroom, just a farty "pop-pop" noise) seem to have been problematic.

On the road?
Cadillac revealed the Provoq, a hydrogen fuel cell-powered concept car in January with a 5 year-plan for production attached. Other marques are hoped between 2010 and 2020.

Shrinking cars
High numbers of 4x4s on our urban roads are not only blamed for pollution, but for many safety issues as well. However, their drivers would argue that they are safer inside than in a small car. If cars are to shrink and therefore boost fuel efficiency under eco-fuel systems, the safety spec has to be improved. Nobody wants to save the planet at the risk of losing their life. On the road Cars are getting smaller and the fuel price crisis may well play a part in the call for dinky designs. Woman car insurance buyers may also increase the desire for small city cars, as insurance premiums for larger cars can be astronomical.

A car should be for life, not just for fashion
Surprisingly, research has shown that we get bored with our cars, and new car purchasing reflects design trends much like fashion seasons. However, if we really are serious about sustainable personal motoring we need to buy a car for life. This would mean a basic chassis with interchangeable panels, parts, even engines, that could be changed as wear and tear takes hold, or technology renders your current driving mode obsolete.

On the Road?
Cars with changeable panels have been marketed for the last ten years or so, but consumer up take is low, at best. Car manufacturers seem quite content that customers appear to want new cars with great regularity.
