Car safety for women, car insurance, road tax, tyre safety the list goes on…

There are lots of rules and regulations to follow when you own and run a vehicle. Safety is paramount, as when driving, you are not only responsible for your own safety but that of other drivers and your passengers. The list of requirements is endless for men and women; car insurance, road tax, MOT, functioning lights, brakes and battery and of course tyres.

By law you must ensure that your tyres meet the correct standard. They are fundamental to your safety as a tyre blowing whilst driving can cause a serious accident especially if you are driving at speed and are unable to come to a safe stop.

It is against the law to have any of the following:

  • Car tyres with tread worn to below 1.6mm
  • A mix of radial and cross ply tyres
  • Over or under-inflated tyres
  • Tyres with cuts, lumps, bulges or tears
  • The wrong sort of tyre fitted to a vehicle or trailer

All tyres must meet the following safety standards:

  • All new tyres should meet European standards for load/speed performance. This is shown by an ‘E’ or an ‘e’ mark on the sidewall
  • If you are buying a retread tyre it must meet British Standard AU144e and should be marked with this number to show that it has met safety checks
  • If you buy a second hand tyres you must make sure that they have the words ‘part worn’ next to the ‘E’ or ‘BS’ mark

Checking your tyres
To make sure that your tyres are correctly inflated you should check every couple of weeks or if the car has been stationary for a period of time. You can find out the correct tyre pressure from the inside of the driver’s door. Most petrol stations offer free air and water so you can make sure your car meets the correct standards every other time you fill up with fuel.
