In 2009, the importance of good car maintenance to safeguard your car insurance for women was beautifully illustrated by a Wisconsin driver. After stalling her car as she was trying to cross an opening drawbridge, the female driver slammed on her brakes and handbrake as the rising road brought her up to a 45 degree angle causing her car to look like something out of an action film.
The drawbridge at Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin had been raised to allow a ship through when the driver somehow failed to notice the warning system which notifies drivers of the bridge's imminent opening. Despite the extraordinarily steep slope the bridge raised the road to, the car managed to remain stationery thanks to a good set of brakes and tyres.
Once the bridge had closed together again the motorist safely made her way across the bridge unharmed and continued to drive off seemingly unfazed.
If however, her brakes or her tyres had not been in such good repair, it may have been another story. While not many motorists are likely to be faced with such an extreme situation, having to park or wait on a steep hill can really test the strength of your handbrake and tyres.
After parking on a steep incline, the last thing you want to find when on your return is your car crashed at the bottom of the hill, or worse, into another car. It is therefore essential that you regularly check your tyres for wear and tear and regularly get your handbrake and foot brake tested to ensure they are working to their full potential.
Driving with your handbrake on will not only cause your motor to have to work harder, but will also quickly wear out the rear brake pads. Handbrakes also loosen over time, rendering them close to useless, so make sure you ask your garage to tighten it during a service.
Worn tyres will also detract from the effectiveness of your car's braking ability. If the tread is not of a sufficient depth, your car is much more likely to skid and aquaplane in wet conditions (and grip to a drawbridge at a 45 degree angle). Tyres should therefore be checked every two weeks for pressure and tread wear.
