She didn't need car insurance for women, she hadn't passed her driving test, yet in 2009 15-year-old Sarah Moore made history in the Ginetta Juniors racing championship by becoming the first female to win a race on the TOCA package – part of the UK's largest motor racing series, the British Touring Car Championship.
And in May of that year, when Sarah stood in top spot on the podium, some of her male competitors said it was a fluke – then she went and did the same thing and won again the following day.
Motor racing is definitely in the Moore family genes as dad, Simon, was a racer and now runs the family team, Tockwith Motor Racing, out of an old airfield near York where the family is based. Her younger brother David also races and her 17-year-old brother, Nigel, has won the Ginetta G50 series and made history, also in 2009, when he became the youngest driver ever to compete in the famous Le Mans 24hr race.
Like many young motor racing competitors Sarah started out in karting, but by her own admission was not very successful. Yet, with some coaching from her brother Nigel and the move to Ginetta Juniors she has quickly become the favourite to take the title when all 20 rounds of racing are complete in October.
The Ginetta Junior G20 car is built for racers aged 14 to 17 years old and is powered by a 1400cc engine. The lightweight fibre-glass body is combined with an FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) approved, strong tubular frame chassis that offers high levels of protection, but makes the car fun to drive and teaches car control and racecraft.
All cars are identical, as only basic set-up changes can be made – rules of the Ginetta Junior Championship prohibit the modification of any major vehicle component - and there are additional safety features to the cars, with an FIA approved safety fuel cell and FIA approved seat.
Two other girls raced alongside Sarah in the 2009 Ginetta Juniors season and another young female was also making racing history at the same time in Formula Renault.
Sarah said, "Girls come up to me now and ask how to get into motorsport. In the future there will be a lot more doing it. The other girls on the grid are not up to where I am, but I want them to beat the boys!"
