Stay sane on a long journey, keeping the children entertained
For parents a long road trip can mean several hours of alternating crying, screaming, boredom and hyperactivity. Taking small children on
a journey is not easy, being cooped up in a car is dull and finding a way to entertain a toddler without space to run around or a TV to glue
them to is a challenge. Follow our tips to keeping small children entertained and make your road trip as stress free as possible whether you
are abroad or here in the UK.
- All children are different so plan your journey according to your child’s behaviour. If your child tires easily start the
journey when they are likely to drop off quickly so that you can get some peace early on in the journey. If they are excitable at the
beginning of the journey plan the in car entertainment accordingly
- Toys that are a good distraction are; paper and crayons, easy dot to dot and colouring in books, etch a sketch, textured and pop up
books, a game boy, lots of books to read (unless your child gets car sick in which case go for audio books which you can borrow from the
library)
- The RAC provide some downloadable games that you can print off and play in the car with your children. They should keep you amused for
a while too!
- Buy a movie video that plugs into your car’s cigarette lighter. It has a small screen and the sound isn’t amazing but it
will keep the kids entertained for more than an hour which is arguably a small price to pay
- A CD player or walkman with lots of music that they can listen to. If their music isn’t to your taste which it may well not be,
they can listen to Tweenies music to their heart’s content
- Plan your stops so that you can get out for a spot of fresh air and something to eat along the way. Also make sure you know where
there are toilet facilities along your journey
- Tie some of their toys to their seat so that they don’t keep dropping them on the floor only for you to have to turn round to
pick them up every fifteen minutes
- Pack pillows and blankets which will encourage them to drop off when the mood takes them
