Carrying your pets safely in the car

If you own a cat or dog then you are more than likely to need to take a road trip with it at some point. Trips to the vet, trips to the countryside and even moving house will require your feline or canine friend to join you in the car. Whilst it can be great fun to have your pooch in the car with you, it can also be very dangerous. In a car crash an unrestrained animal could be seriously injured or even injure the cars human passengers. For example a small dog could be thrown forward with the force of nine men in a car accident.

If your pet is unrestrained it could also distract the driver and cause an accident. Animals may be unsure about car journeys as they do not know where you are taking them and for how long. Because of this they may be excitable or frightened. Some animals are also susceptible to motion sickness. You can find out about the range of medicines available for your pets from the vet.

Cages
You should invest in a special cage, restraint or bag for your dog or cat to travel in. This should be big enough for the animal to stand up, move around and sit and lie down. The carrier should also have a leak proof and absorbent bottom. If the animal is nervous you may want to put some familiar items in the cage with it. You should allow the animal to become familiar with the cage before you travel

Your animal should be secured in the car as in the event of an accident it may escape and cause further accidents. You should also ensure that your cat or dog is micro chipped so it can be traced back to you should it escape from your car.

The three main safety tips for travelling with a pet are:

  • Always ensure the animal is restrained
  • Never let your pet hang its head out of the window
  • Never leave your pet unattended in a hot car as this can be fatal
