A new racing car design finished in September 2009 sparked great consternation in the CoverGirl car insurance for women office after it was announced that the car would be powered from chocolate. Designed as a green alternative to the more traditional F1 car, the prototype is built from a range of recycled materials and has a steering wheel made from carrot fibre.
As much as we support research into more eco-friendly cars, with the news that the car was to be powered by chocolate and wine, we did grow concerned. What if the design took off and all cars started to be run off our favourite evening tipple and snack? Although there are plenty of cheap and nasty wines that they would certainly be welcome to use, the chocolate, they cannot.
Thankfully, in the midst of arranging mass chocolate shop sit-ins and plans to chain ourselves to the supermarket chocolate aisles, someone read the design specifications properly – the car is to be powered on stale wine and the waste from chocolate factories. Phew! They are certainly welcome to both of those.
Peace was quickly restored in the office as everyone got back to sorting out car insurance premiums and our emails of protest to the inventor were quickly abandoned. Lucky really, because the car actually sounds pretty amazing - described as the 'greenest of its kind', the racing car can reach top speeds of 135mph when it hits the race track.
Its inventors at Warwick University say their invention may be green but can reach 60mph from a standing start in less than 2.5 seconds.
Project leader Dr Kerry Kirwan, said, "It's the first car of its kind built from waste material, recycled material and natural materials, but it has the same performance levels and looks just like a Formula 3 racing car."
Despite running on biofuels, the car is believed to be capable of reaching up to 170mph and is set to race more conventional F3 cars in the future.
As they are reliant on the production of chocolate and wine, they will help support the chocolate and wine industries, ensuring that neither goes out of production. Therefore we at the CoverGirl Car insurance office give them our full support and wish them the best of luck.
