BMW is a car manufacturer above the rest and nothing can portray the true simplicity of its models more accurately than the array of adverts that are printed in the daily broadsheets. With such a vast history in the world of motoring, anybody would have to be a fool not to recognise the famous logo. But with that in mind, would BMW's customers be able to spot a spoof advert if they saw one?
Every year, the world famous car manufacturer takes an opportunity to let their hair down and make their customers chuckle. On 1st April, also known as April Fool's Day, BMW has an advert printed up in the newspapers to look like any other, normal advert. However, take a better look and you'll see that it's more than just the usual advert talking about the latest model; it is in fact a joke.
The April Fools Day concept
The advertising agency behind the jokes, WCRS, has created a catalogue
of plausible adverts that promote revolutionary pieces of technology that
BMW has supposedly created. Only the car manufacturer hasn't really made
a windscreen that repel flies or a horn that actually calms other drivers,
they're completely made up
Uwe Ellinghaus, BMW UK's marketing director, said: "The April Fool's Day ads were started by WCRS in the 80s, but we have not executed them every year. It is the aim of the ads to demonstrate that a serious, engineering-driven, German brand can laugh at itself and play with the existing user imagery of its drivers. Although few people are still fooled, the self-irony displayed by the April Fool's ads has had a positive influence on our image by making BMW more human and approachable. And maybe the ads also help to overcome the preconception in this country that Germans are humour-free."
Examples of April Fools Day adverts
Out of the many adverts that have been made over the years, CoverGirl
Car Insurnace Services, the experts in woman car insurance, take a look
at some of the best.
One of the best adverts devised was about the new Badgewash system. The advert talked about how the BMW badge is a symbol of pride for its owners and that it can easily become covered up with daily dirt and grime. To solve the problem, BMW apparently created a wiper that could be attached to the badge to keep it looking shiny and clean. Obviously this was all made up!
Another April Fools Day advert had BMW claiming that motorists could alter their tyre pressure from within their cars. By using a control panel in the front of the vehicle, which displays the car's current tyre pressure, the driver could change its levels with a touch of a button. BMW claimed the TPC (Tyre Pressure Control System) would eliminate the need to constantly check your tyres - again this was completely false.
One more of the best fake adverts saw the car manufacture tell its car insurance customers that they had created a solution to keep flies off their windscreens with the Insect Deflector Screen (IDS). BMW supposedly added a rubber solution to their cars which would allow the flies to literally bounce off the window, leaving their cars looking just as clean as the day they were bought from the showroom.
Adverts such as these have been keeping BMW enthusiasts entertained throughout the years and we can only hope that there will be many more April Fools Day adverts to look forward to in the future.
