Nobody can doubt that BMW cars boast some of the best streamline curves, the most luxurious interior and can drive like a purring kitten, but sometimes it's nice to have something that's got a little more character and a lot harder to come buy. Classic cars are a great way to enjoy the engineering of BMW's past, and with fewer and fewer in existence, you'll definitely be the talk of the roads.

Because we love the old as well as the new, we've decided to take a look at some of our favourite classic BMW cars. So, if you thinking or trading in your Coupe or Touring for something with a little more history to it, here are some of our desired BMWs.

Top classic BMWs
With such an impressive history, there are a number of classic BMWs that we would love to get our hands on but for now, here are some of our favourites.

Dixi
The Dixi was the first car to be built by BMW. In 1929, BMW bought the automobile manufacturer Automobilwerk Eisenach and with it, also bought the rights to build the Dixi. This was a two-seater car and had a top speed of 46mph. If ever a classic car enthusiast wanted to get their hands on gold dust, then in motoring terms, the Dixi is just that.

Isetta
This car was a massive success in the post-war era and was even given to wheelchair users by the NHS, as they could easily drive their chair in the car using the single large door on the front of the vehicle. The UK version with its right hand drive meant that the engine was also on the right side and so to counterbalance the vehicle, a 60 lb weight was added to the left side of the car. In the 1962, the Isetta ceased production in the UK, although the engine was produced for another two years.

M1
The M1 was the first and only mid-engined vehicle to be produced by BMW between 1978 and 1981. With its 3.5 L 6-cylinder engine, the M1 coupe took to the world of motor sport but its availability to BMW fans was shortly lived. At the end of its lifespan, just 456 models were produced, making it one of the rarest classics to get your hands on.

319
This two-seater car was designed by Peter Schimanowski and was introduced in 1931. It had a very sleek, black bodywork, which appealed to many people wanting to own a BMW. With a top speed of 81mph, this German car was definitely one to impress and continues to do so at classic car shows.

3.0 CSL
With the first car announced in 1971, the CSL was built to be extremely lightweight in the world of motor sport. This particular BMW had thinner body panels, no front bumper, side windows made from Plexiglas and alloy skinned opening panels. It truly was a car of its day.

*A replacement car can normally be arranged under one of the following conditions: (1) Comprehensive policyholders – a replacement car may be available under the terms of your insurance policy. Please check your policy details for more information. (2) Non fault accident – where we have the name, car registration number and insurance details of the person who caused the accident, we can supply a replacement car. This is done on a credit hire basis which means the costs for this service will be passed onto the insurance company of the person who caused the accident. We may not be able to arrange a replacement car where we are unable to get an admission of liability from their insurance company, or where the driver is untraceable or uninsured. (3) Repair garage – if your car is booked in for repairs following an accident, the repair garage may be able to provide a replacement car (subject to availability).
