WhatCar? 2007 award winners

We know how hard it can be to make up your mind when it comes to everything motoring because there is just so much choice around. The media bombards us with cheap car insurance ads here, there and everywhere - so much so that it can be hard to know where you will be actually getting the best deal.

However, the indecision that we experience with cheap car insurance can quickly be solved by getting a few quotes to find out which company is offering you the best cover for your money.

When it comes to buying a car, however, the decision is a lot less clear cut than purchasing a motor insurance policy. There are so many different manufacturers in the car market, each producing a vast range of models, which can make it a bewildering experience. Even if you do have a model in mind, the array of different specifications on offer can throw you into confusion.

However, all is not lost because there is something which can come to the aid of prospective car buyers. The annual WhatCar? awards are presented to the car models which the experts have picked as being the very best about.

WhatCar? award winners 2007
The WhatCar? awards are presented to cars in five categories based on size:

  • Supermini
  • Small family car
  • Family car
  • Estate
  • MPV
Supermini - Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Club air-con 5dr
The Vauxhall Corsa is a familiar sight on UK roads and has long been one of the favourite for younger drivers. However, this latest incarnation has made it an even bigger hit with motorists and testers alike. The WhatCar experts described it as stylish, spacious and refined - three words which are rarely used to describe cars that fall into the supermini category.

Most superminis are driven by people who don't want to spend a fortune on their car and the little Vauxhall Corsa is a winner on this front too. It has an average mpg of 47.9 and its low insurance grouping also means that drivers can get some very cheap car insurance quotes. According to WhatCar?, the average quote for a Vauxhall Corsa is £299 - a bargain.
Small family car - Volkswagen Golf 1.6 FSI Match
The Volkswagen Golf is a car with an impeccable reputation for quality and performance, and it won a much deserved place in the WhatCar? 2007 award line-up thanks to these attributes - and more. The WhatCar team described it as fun, fast and engaging, all of which add up to make the Volkswagen Golf a fantastic drive.

Despite the Golf's great performance, its fuel efficiency is still pretty good and it records an average mpg of 40.4. Its capacity for getting cheap car insurance is equally attractive, as it qualifies for below-average insurance group 6. The WhatCar? experts suggest that a typical car insurance quote for a Volkswagen Golf is a very reasonable £353.
Volkswagen Passet Online Motor Insurance Family car - Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI S
The Volkswagen Passat was the second winner for Volkswagen in the 2007 WhatCar? awards and, like the Golf, does not disappoint in any capacity. Described as a classy, spacious car that is great to drive, it makes a fantastic choice for people wanting a family car that exudes refinement whilst still being really functional.

It offers very good fuel efficiency, with the average mpg coming in at 47.9 - that is equal to the rates of the Vauxhall Corsa supermini. It falls into insurance group 9, which is slightly below average but does put the rates up to around £409 for the typical motorist - around £50 more than most would pay to get cheap car insurance for driving the award-winning Golf.
Vauxhall Vectra Car Inurance Estate - Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTi Exclusive
Estates used to have a rather fuddy-duddy image that it has taken quite a while for them to shake off. However, the Vauxhall Vectra estate has well and truly managed it and this practical car really is a pleasure to drive, both in terms of looks and performance. It combines stylishness, comfort and very generous storage capacity in a great blend that is ticking all the boxes with UK car buyers.

Despite its large proportions, you still don't have to pay a fortune to run the Vauxhall Vectra estate. It gets a very respectable 47.8 mpg and slots into insurance group 10. This is one of the lowest insurance group ratings that estates tend to fit into so you should actually get rather cheap car insurance for this type of car. According to WhatCar?, the typical driver can expect an insurance bill of £433.
Citroen C4 Picasso insurance MPV - Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi SX EGS
Like estates, MPVs have never managed to gain a reputation for being stylish. However the Citroen C4 Picasso breaks the mould in this respect with its strikingly appealing design which, incidentally, also provides excellent visibility. These facts, along with a spacious interior, easy-to-move seats and a comfy ride sealed the Picasso's success in the MPV section of the WhatCar? 2007 awards.

You won't find yourself scraping the bottom of your purse when it comes to paying for running the Picasso either. It manages an excellent average of 47.9 mpg and is very reasonable to insure as it fits into insurance group 6. Statistics from WhatCar? show that the average Citroen C4 Picasso owner will be able to get a cheap car insurance quote for around £353.
