Peugeot's 206cc is behind a wave of convertible sales in the UK, according to Diamond. Research conducted by the woman car insurance firm found that female motorists now drive three times as many soft-tops as we did ten years ago.
The 206 has replaced Mazda's MX-5 as the most popular choice among convertible-driving women, and Diamond's managing director believes that the car's low price is largely responsible for this developing trend.
"The 206cc was the car that started the craze for affordable folding hard top roofs and its popularity has no doubt had an effect on the increase we've seen," she said, adding that Peugeot's success in the convertible market has prompted other car makers to try their hand at a cheap 'cc' model.
The effects of global warming, which brings more sunny days to UK shores than ever before, may also have contributed to the current craze for soft tops in this country.
