Car insurance for women is marketed as being cheaper because ladies are safer drivers. However, it appears that a large number of men still do not believe this - even though statistics now show that female drivers were involved in half the number of accidents in 2005 that men were.
A survey by cheap car insurance firm yesinsurance.co.uk found that a third of men think that they are better drivers than women, even when told that ladies were involved in 93,000 accidents in the time that male drivers had 172,000 crashes.
Ladies were found to be much more on target, with 57% believing that women make safer motorists. Just over fifth of men agree, with 23% admitting to researchers that female drivers have the edge over them.
A spokesperson for yesinsurance said: "Both accident statistics and research of driving behaviour points to the fact that women are generally safer than men when on the road.
"Men tend to drive more miles than women over the course of a year but even when this is taken into account, men still come out worst with a greater risk of undertaking risky manoeuvres and driving at high speed."
A spokesperson for CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, which provides cheap car insurance for women, said: "This is something that motor insurance companies have known for a long time - it is amazing that male drivers still refuse to admit that, generally speaking, ladies do make safer drivers."
