A recent survey undertaken by researchers at Brunel University has revealed that ladies are less likely than men to put cheap motor insurance quotes at risk by trying to avoid getting snapped by a speed camera.
The practice of braking hard just before a speed camera and then accelerating away is considered to be very dangerous, as it can lead to a loss of control. Female drivers who do this risk not only injury but also inflated woman car insurance premiums in the future.
The study found that one in four ladies admitted to trying to outsmart the speed camera like this compared to two in five male drivers.
The researchers also found, somewhat worryingly, that this technique is becoming more common, with a sevenfold increase recorded in the last few years.
One of the Brunel University research team, Dr Claire Corbett, said that their findings indicate that speed cameras actually create dangerous driving on the roads, rather than making them safer as intended.
However, transport minister Stephen Ladyman believes that speed cameras do fulfil their purpose because people do drive slower through the stretch of road where the camera is located.
He said: "The reason that we make cameras so obvious is because we put them where there has been a past record of accidents and speeding. They are the black spots.
"We want them to be obvious not because we want to catch people but because we want people to slow down and not be caught."
Lee-Anne Bass, of woman car insurance company CoverGirl Car Insurance Services, commented: "I have seen many drivers avoiding a flash from a speed camera by braking then speeding up once they are out of the trap - it is very common behaviour.
"However, it doesn't surprise me that women aren't as likely to try to dodge the speed cameras because previous research has shown they are less likely to be speeding in the first place."
