The reason why car insurance for women is so much cheaper than for men is partly because of ladies' lower cost accidents but also because of ladies' better driving records. Across the world, female drivers are much less likely to be convicted of drink driving and other motoring offences than male motorists, making women a much lower car insurance risk.
A recent study in Australia may provide an explanation as to why so many fewer ladies are caught behind the wheel whilst over the drink drive limit.
The survey, carried out by motor insurance company AAMI, showed that women are much more aware of drink drive limits than men. 45% of ladies answered correctly when asked how much alcohol could be safely drunk in a two hour period before driving, whilst just 32% of male respondents gave the right answer.
However, what may not be such good news for Australian companies providing cheap car insurance for women is that 45% of motorists admitted driving while drunk. Further, 13% of these believed that they could do this perfectly safely.
Trent Sayers, state manager for AAMI, said: "This kind of arrogance flies in the face of much good public education work done by government and road safety authorities and these drivers demonstrate little regard for their own safety or that of other road users."
